On Sunday, March 21st, 2021, at the HNEC Headquarters, a round table was held to enhance the participation of women in the electoral process. It was attended by two members of HNEC’s Board, Mrs. Rabab Halab and Mr. Abo- Baker Marda, the Head of HNEC Women Support Unit, Mrs. Suzan Hami, and some representatives of CSOs concerned with women’s rights. The objective of this round table is to discuss the challenges that hinder their participation in the upcoming elections.
The meeting was opened by Mrs. Rabab Halab expressing her appreciation for the contribution of women’s organizations in cooperating with HNEC, in order to raise the level of women’s electoral participation and enhance their position in the society; moreover, she praised the spirit of responsibility undertaken by these organizations and their efforts in building national and democratic awareness.
The meeting reviewed some of the challenges facing women’s participation in the upcoming elections, including the issue of the participation of Libyan women married to foreigners. In this context, the two women, Mrs. Jazia Issa and Mrs. Amal Al-Nani, representing the Organization “I am Libyan and my son is foreigner” talked about the negative aspects and obstacles that prevent the participation of this group of women.
