A training workshop on the Comprehensive Design and Easy Access project was concluded at the headquarters of the Electoral Administration Office in Benghazi, on Tuesday, December 1st, 2020, under the supervision of the Persons with Disabilities Support Unit of the High National Elections Commission, and in cooperation with the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and the Department of Technologies and Maintenance of Educational Facilities.
The activities of the workshop – which was organized to coincide with the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which falls on the third of December of each year – targeted engineers from the Ministry of Education concerned with the architectural design of polling stations within schools that have been identified as electoral centers, and representatives of CSOs concerned with persons with disabilities, and project engineers of the Benghazi Electoral Administration Office.
The closing ceremony was attended by Mr. Abu Bakr Marda, a member of the Board of Commissioners, Mr. Salah Al-Aqouri, Director of the Department of Persons with Disabilities Affairs at the Ministry of Social Affairs, and Ms. Magda Al-Katib, the Head of the Persons with Disabilities Support Unit of the HNEC.
The workshop, which lasted for three days, reviewed the local and international standards for the preparation of polling centers in line with ensuring that PWDs have easy access to the ballot boxes. This comes as part of the finalization of the training program organized by the Commission during the month of December of last year, in the presence of representatives of the Ministry of Education And a number of CSOs regarding (Accessible Architectural Design).
