The Chairman of the High National Elections Commission, Dr. Emad Al-Sayeh met with the Ambassador of the Italian Republic to Libya, Mr. Giuseppe Buccino at the Commission’s headquarters in Tripoli, on Tuesday.
The meeting – which came as part of a visit carried out by the Italian Ambassador and his accompanying delegation to the headquarters of the Commission – discussed the Commission’s readiness to implement future electoral operations that may be included in any political settlement, and the level of its preparations to translate the agreement of the political parties to put an end to the transitional phase through an electoral process.
The meeting also discussed the legislative and political challenges that may face the upcoming electoral process at the local and international levels, and the availability of the four conditions for implementing an electoral process that may come within the framework of a comprehensive political settlement.
The meeting reviewed the international support provided by donor countries, including Italy, which is directed to support the electoral process, and to establish a strong infrastructure for democracy that produces political bodies with an elected grass-roots base.
The Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Emad Al-Sayah, pointed out that, this extensive communication by the international community with the Commission comes within the framework of pushing the political process towards a proper settlement, and reviewing the available options through the conduction of credible elections as a means to renew legitimacy by resorting to the ballot box; as a way to peaceful change through the involvement of various components and segments of the Libyan society in determining their fate and the future of their country.
It’s worth mentioning that the High National Elections Commission has witnessed, at the end of June, a visit by the European Union Ambassador to Libya, Mr. Alan Bujia to its headquarters in Tripoli; when HNEC welcomed the decision to extend the United Nations electoral assistance project, working to support the Commission’s preparations for any upcoming electoral events.
